âCourage calls to courage everywhere, and its voice cannot be denied.â
Millicent Garrett Fawcett
One of the very best-known names in the British suffrage movement is that of politician, writer and feminist campaigner Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847â1929) who, from 1897 until 1919, led Britainâs largest womenâs rights association, the National Union of Womenâs Suffrage Societies. In 2018, she was the first woman honoured with a statue in Parliament Square. It was crafted by sculptor Gillian Wearing (b. 1963), after a campaign led by Caroline Criado Perez (b. 1984). Fawcett is wearing her tweed walking suit and holding a banner on which words taken from her famous 1920 speech (quoted above) are engraved.
